Waren Mill to Belford

There are more direct ways of getting from Newcastle to this part of Northumbria, as the road sign near Bamburgh makes clear: Newcastle 48 Miles (77km), it says. Do not be put off! My trip clock, with all the fascinating diversions, read 84.36miles (135km). There are two ways to get from Bamburgh to Belford. The first, which goes to Waren Mill (see accomodation below) by way of Budle Bay along the B1342, is the more attractive, though traffic in the summer might make the Sustrans alternative along the B1341 a better bet. If you follow the former route, take the road to the right when you get to Waren Mill. You soon see the Route 1 signs.

If you take the latter, the Mizen Head Hotel should be on your right as you leave Bamburgh. Be careful coming out of Spindlestone, just past the weir; the road is steep and uneven. I came off, thanks to thick farm mud covering a rut. It was only the quick reactions of the driver behind that saved my head being spread across the road.

Go right at the windmill, passing Chesterhill Farm, then go left all the way to the level crossing. You then have to cross the A1 on a fast and dangerous stretch before the steep climb up to Belford. At the top of the hill go right, or take a left down the hill into Belford.
