Go to the top of Fell Lane and turn right onto Beacon Edge. There are fabulous views from here followed by a long descent to the B6412. Enjoy it while you can; the really serious bit is about to start.

Around Langwathby are the villages of Great Salkeld, Edenhall and Little Salkeld. If you are overnighting at Great Salkeld (the food at the Highland Drove is exceptional and the place is in the Michelin good pub food guide) then take a left along the B6412 for 3km. Great Salkeld is a pretty little village and the pub does B&B.

If you turn right onto the B6412 you are soon in the village of Edenhall, where the Eden Hall Country House offers splendid accommodation and fine cooking. Both villages are close to Langwathby, with its lovely village green and Shepherd pub. The nearest B&B to Langwathby itself is just out of the village, at Little Salkeld. The Atkinsons run an equine centre with accommodation. Clive and Sam are still doing some accommodation at Langstanes in the village, but said they were winding down.

Apart from the pub and shop there's even a railway station which services the popular Carlisle to Settle line. This area is popular for overnight stops because the villages are strategically well-placed for attacking Hartside and the other hills that make the next section the hardest. Melmerby, on the A686 about 5km from Langwathby is also popular. There's a pub there, a famous bakery but limited B & B.

Langwathby was a Viking settlement; Edenhall once boasted a fine stately home and Little Salkeld, with its watermill, is about 3km away - close to Long Meg and Little Meg stone circles. Long Meg comprises a megalith at the head of 60 stones some 360tt (115m) in diameter.
