AMBLE

Amblemarks another (brief) urban interlude. Positioned on the mouth of the River Coquet, Amble is Northumberland's most important fishing port north of the Tyne, and was originally a prehistoric settlement. There is evidence that the Romans too lived here before the Benedictine monks arrived in the 11th century.

The coal industry in the 19th century led to its expansion. Now there's a 200-berth marina, Northumberland's only one. Trips to Coquet Island bird sanctuary are run regularly in May and June. Tourist Information Centre: T:+44(0)1665 712313.

There's also Breeze Bikes - small and extremely helpful outfit run by Mark Breeze. He has a recovery service for those in serious trouble and will even lend out bikes if repairs look like taking a long time. Coquet Garage, Coquet Street, NE65 0DN. T:+44 (0)1665 710323.
