Allenheads

This is an unremitting stretch with the steepest climb directly out of Nenthead, so if you are staying overnight you may wish to sidestep one of those typically generous Cumbrian breakfasts.
Turn left off the A689 after just over a kilometre of hel ish gradient, past the disused lead mineshafts, and soon you will be crossing the highest point on the route - Black Hil . At 609 metres (just a tad under 2000 feet) it is 29 metres (nearly 100 feet) higher than Hartside. Once you have conquered the climb past Kil hope Law it's plain sailing to Allenheads.
This is a delightful village nestling among the trees. Its focal point is a marvel ous little pub cal ed the Al enheads Inn, one of the most popular stop-off points anywhere along the route.
A century ago this prosperous, peaceful little haven was a toneless grey val ey of slag heaps shrouded by smog, a mining community that provided one sixth of the nation's lead. It slipped into decline along with the industry, but has revitalised itself. There is now a village Trust, a visitor centre, mining exhibitions, a shop and a café.
It is also home to the British Norwegian Ski Club. There are three tow ropes on the run to the top at 540 metres. Annual family membership is £30. Facilities on the piste include a small bait hut where there is a BYO glühwein facility. Apres ski is in the pub.
An ideal place for celebrities, it is usually free of paparazzi and gossip columnists. A popular haunt with the beau monde of Carlisle and Newcastle, Allenheads is again a coming place.

Newhouses was built in 1788 by Sir Thomas Blackett. Standing 1400 feet above sea level, it was originally a short row of cottages provided for workers in the Allenheads Leadmines. Warm and comfortable with fantastic views over the fells and open all year, there are 5 beds in 2 twins and a single room. One is en-suite while the other shares a bathroom with the single room. We live in the adjoining cottage but you have your own sitting room, dining room and kitchen.
